Resources Part 2

Video Relay Interpretation:
Video relay interpretation is essentially a phone call between a Deaf person and a hearing person via a third-party interpreter. VCD’s on-site video relay stations enable a Deaf client to establish a video connection with the interpreter at an independent video relay service provider, who is able to see the Deaf person signing, voice the communication to the hearing person, and then sign back the hearing person’s response.

Interpreter Training
As a contribution to the larger community, VCD welcomes student interns from local community colleges and state universities. These students—the next generation of interpreters—get on-the-job training and intense mentoring to help them further their education and develop their interpreting skills.

Job Development
As part of VCD’s job development services, we assess the skills, training, aptitudes, and experience of our clients, and then help them develop interview and application skills and create résumés. Our clients with additional vocational challenges—those with multiple disabilities, mental health issues, short job histories, or lack of experience—can also find assistance at VCD. For non-English speakers or signers, we teach basic English and ASL.

Job Placement
At VCD we understand that finding the right job has an immeasurable impact on the lives of our clients, so we assist them in searching and interviewing for jobs. With the relationships we have developed with community employers, we are also able to directly place clients in jobs. We have placed persons in a variety of occupations in positions ranging from entry level to professional.

Job Training
To assist clients in retaining their jobs, VCD provides initial on-the-job training to help new employees learn their duties and understand important information about their new work environment, such as safety measures, benefits, or procedures. When needed, our staff members also assist clients with specific training to perform their jobs.
